Simsea in Haugesund has developed a specialized DP course for subsea personnel. This course covers the most relevant topics from Nautical Institutes 5-day DP Induction course.

– In addition to the interesting lectures, the 12 hours spent in a full scale simulator gives the participants a real feeling for how the DP system works, says Sveinung Dalen COO Subsea at Simsea.

By gaining an understanding for the DP system and what it can be used for, the participants will be able to use this knowledge to manage operations in a more safe and efficient way.

A wide range of positions from the subsea industry, such as COOs, Engineering Managers, Engineers (all levels), Company clients, Offshore Managers, Shift Supervisors, ROV Supervisors and Survey Technicians, can benefit from the course. No nautical education is needed to participate, but offshore experience and knowledge of vessel operations is of great benefit.

The course covers topics such as understanding and use of DP modes, Position Reference systems, understanding DP scenarios and worst case scenarios. These topics are also repeated in the simulator exercise so that the participants can experience firsthand what it takes to operate a DP system.

– The three days used on this course gives the participants a new insight to DP systems that is relevant and useful in their operations, says instructor Arne Pedersen. It create a much better atmosphere between Bridge personnel and Operational personnel when they have more detailed knowledge about each other's issues and challenges.

After the course, the participants will gain an understanding of DP principles and equipment, as well as be able to plan and use the different modes and possibilities in a DP system. The participants will also have an overview of DP Class demands and safety factors according to IMO MSC/circ.645 and plan the use of these in HAZOP/RAs/setup/operations. In addition, course will also give examples of ASOG (Activity Specific Operational Guidelines), CAMO (Critical Activity Mode) and vessel operations inside critical areas.

Simsea has already carried out the first of these courses with great feedback from the participants. The dates for our future courses are available on our website.
