Important Research Infrastructure

The Lofoten-Vesterålen Cabled Ocean Observatory will study the marine ecosystem and the effects of petroleum activities in vulnerable habitats. The observatory will support future marine monitoring and a range of other tasks, including testing of new subsea technologies. A first node of the system is already in place.

The project opens up for a new approach to real-time monitoring which is of great importance for establishing a feedback management strategy on marine operations in sensitive ecosystems. The system produces continuous information about the physical and biological environment and their effects on the ecosystem and its resources, as well as on climate and geology.
