Technology and Science for Girls

Last week 15 young and skilful women presented their professions and working day for all 80 girls in ninth grade in Flora municipality. The event aims to strengthen future recruitment to the ocean industries.

It is simply not easy to choose what profession one should choose when in ninth grade. – That's why it's inspiring to meet persons who work in so many different professions, says Miriam Eikefjord, pupil at Eikefjord ungdomsskule. – I didn’t know about all of these jobs before I came here today, she says.

Many Opportunities

This is the fourth time GCE Subsea and collaborating partners Maritime Association Sogn og Fjordane and Flora municipality arranges such a science day. – For us, it is important to work for good recruitment, says Subsea Innovator Trond Strømgren in GCE Subsea. – We are expecting increased activity in the ocean-based industries and we know that the many companies in the region will have a great need for local labour in the future.

The fifteen young women presented professions such as crane driver, bio medical laboratory technician, electrician, underwater technology engineer, roughneck, harbour master and aqua medicine biologist.

Westcon Employs Talented Women

A company that has recruited young women is Westcon Yards in Florø. Over the past two years, the company has added four new female engineers to their labour force. – I am very pleased with the work they do. They also contribute to a good working environment, says Mikael Johansen, Site Manager for Westcon Yards. He encourages more girls to educate themselves for a technical profession and believes that there will be an increased need for such kind of labour in the future.
