Affordable and Available Test Infrastructure
The cluster is working to increase the utilisation of available test infrastructure and strengthen the interaction between research and industry.
World-class infrastructure and expertise are essential for research and development of new ocean technologies. The Norwegian Ocean Observation Laboratory (“The Ocean lab”) provides access to a wide range of national research infrastructure, including ROV, AUV and gliders.
In a recent theme meeting about “The Ocean Lab” we discussed how we can utilise and extend collaboration with mutual benefits for both the research- and the ocean industries. A more targeted workshop was also held the following day to identify specific projects and activities going forward.
Closer Collaboration with the Catapult
The “Ocean lab” will work on the following pillars; Research, innovation, education and to showcase ocean technology. With the entry point from the research side, this matches and complements the Ocean Innovation Norwegian Catapult Centre very well, focusing on the industry.
A key takeaway from the meeting was the desire for a closer collaboration with the Ocean Innovation Norwegian Catapult Centre, which focuses on offering available test infrastructure and competence to the industry. Other areas for increased collaboration are piloting possibilities, student projects, joint seminars and working groups.
– Research cruises could provide valuable field experience for new technologies, that are considered too risky or immature for the industry to pilot. We will continue to strengthen this collaboration and assist companies in developing new solutions, says Jon O. Hellevang in GCE Ocean Technology. He adds that both GCE Ocean Technology and the Catapult centers have pre-project funding to support innovation projects.
