Immense Growth within Offshore Wind
The capacity of announced offshore wind projects almost doubled in 2020 to a stunning 550 GW according to NORWEP’s Global Offshore Wind Market Report.
The latest trends and numbers from the offshore wind market was presented by Jørgen Theodorsen from NORWEP at our seminar with NORWEP and Maritime Bergen this week.
Key Findings
Key findings from the Norwegian Energy Partners (NORWEP) Global Offshore Wind Market Report show that the development of offshore wind is now speeding up across the globe. In fact, it moves so fast that a June report, might even be outdated in September according to Theodorsen.
He claimed that there is a potential of an estimated 80-100 bn NOK worth of Norwegian deliveries to the global offshore wind market annually by 2030 “if we don't miss the train”.
Some of the biggest markets under development are China, UK, Vietnam, Brazil, USA, Japan and Sweden.
China is an exceptional market for offshore wind, but rather challenging to enter according to the report, but there are markets like UK and Germany, in closer proximity to Norway and with an immense growth, that Norwegian suppliers could more easily enter.
The report highlights the decisive decrease in cost for offshore wind with a reduction at almost 75%. Floating wind is expected to further decrease with an estimated cost of around €60/MWH by year 2030.
News from the Industry and Political Debate
We also had the pleasure of hearing the latest developments within offshore wind by Stig Waage from Odfjell Oceanwind, Jan Kristian Haukeland from DOF Subsea and Ivar Singstad from Innovation Norway.
The seminar ended with a political debate with Odd Harald Hovland (Ap) og Liv Kari Eskeland (H).
It was reassuring to hear that both political parties are very positive to the development in offshore wind and are looking forward to seeing the great interest from the industry on the two announced areas Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø II.
