Cluster Insight with Hardanger Hydrogen Hub

Ingvald Torblå is CEO of Hardanger Hydrogen Hub and Odda Technology.
Ingvald Torblå is CEO of Hardanger Hydrogen Hub and Odda Technology.

With a focus on hydrogen production, storage, and efficient use, Hardanger Hydrogen Hub aims to develop industrial scale hydrogen application in Odda, with potential global impact in meeting net zero targets.

Cluster Insight offers a glimpse into the daily operations of GCE Ocean Technology’s members and collaborators through a series of six questions.

This week, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ingvald Torblå at Hardanger Hydrogen Hub.

1. What is your role at Hardanger Hydrogen Hub?

I am one of the founders and the CEO of Hardanger Hydrogen Hub, a company focused on developing hydrogen solutions, including production, storage, and efficient use with minimal environmental footprint.

At the same time, we aim to introduce new systems and solution for the industry across all levels.

2. Your primary focus at work right now is?

Our company is the result of four years of development, and our main focus now is to turn pre-projects into concrete initiatives. We're also focused on building connections with the right partners as we scale up our activities.

3. Biggest challenges and opportunities in the future?

Our goal is to help people understand that this is not just about hydrogen, which some see as an inefficient energy-carrier and industrial feedstock.

The real opportunity lies in shifting perspectives: it's about optimizing the use of limited renewable energy by using hydrogen as a carrier to store surplus power.

We also aim to utilize the many industrial biproducts, such as cooling water, oxygen and CO2, as when combined with H2, can create valuable industrial feedstocks.

4. Best part of being member in a cluster?

Being part of a well-established and skilled industry cluster like GCE Ocean Technology, is crucial for our development.

The greatest advantage is the opportunity to collaborate with talented people who bring valuable knowledge and resources.

5. Your business/life motto

Share your knowledge, and it will come back to you multiplied.

6. Which cluster member should we interview next?

I would like to learn more about one of the new members in the cluster; Mongstad Tavleteknikk.

Thank you for the insight Ingvald.

About

Hardanger Hydrogen Hub was developed out of Ineos' (formerly Tizir) plans to replace coal with hydrogen and then the need of access to a huge amount of the energy-carrier in the production processes.

This was combined with the knowledge about the new subsea storage H2 technology currently under development, all ended up in pilot projects.

One of the goals is to store Hydrogen at the seabed in south of the Sørfjorden in the Hardangerfjord, utilising new unique technology.

These new systems could have global significance by ensuring the possibility to balance power grids and store renewable energy after the power sources.

Now, Hardanger Hydrogen Hub also aims to develop industrial scale hydrogen applications where Long Duration Energy Storage of Hydrogen is one of the enablers.
